State Fair Horse Show Competition

   

Dear 4-H members and Leaders,

As most of you are now aware, the State Fair of Virginia has been canceled for the 2012 year.  This means that the State Fair Drill Team Competition will also not take place for this year.  Hopefully, by next year, our Committee and supporters will be able to provide a time and place for this event.  

Last year at the State 4-H Horse and Pony Championship Show, we offered a Drill Team Exhibition Class.  We have decided to offer that class again this year and encourage you and your Club to put together a musical freestyle for exhibition on Saturday night of the State Show.  We only have time for eight teams total which means each district may send two teams.  In the event a district chooses not to send a team, another district may be allowed to send more than two teams.  If a district has more than two teams interested in participating, each district will determine which two teams will represent their district in the exhibition class.  Please contact me if you are planning to prepare a drill team in order for us to meet the 8 team limit.

The rules for this exhibition class are as follows:

Drill Team Freestyle Presentation:

1. Size of team: minimum of 6; maximum of 16.
2. Time: Minimum of 5 minutes and a maximum of 7 minutes
3. Music: Music of choice. Must provide music on CD ONLY – no other music should be on the CD.
4. Maneuvers: emphasis on safety and appropriate to ability of drill riders and horses. Cantering/loping will be allowed if suited for members of the team.
5. Ring Size: exhibitors may designate area for performance by placing cones.
6. The class will not be formally judged – all participants will receive an award.  
7. You must be entered in the State Show in order to participate in this class even if this is the only class in which you plan to ride.

I am sad that the drill competition and the State Fair will not happen this year, but we can use this opportunity to "keep the Drill alive" by entering this class.
